1700 Mk2 as an apartment?
"More than enough comfort and space"
As mentioned earlier in this newsletter the sixth 1700 Mk2 has been sold to a family with yachting in their DNA. Seventeen-year-old son Jan Julius has always been fascinated by boats and will primarily use the new 1700 Mk2 as an apartment. In this exclusive interview for Items he explains how this will pan out in practice.
Can you briefly tell us who Jan Julius is?
“Certainly. I am 17 years old and following an MBO course that will prepare me to meet my goal of starting my own business. It will most likely be something to do with boats as I’ve had a passion for sailing since I was very young. Our entire family has always been involved with boats. I used to go with my grandfather on his yacht and that’s when I caught the bug. I even had a little launch of my own when I was 12, which is where it all started for me.
“My parents have owned a Boarnstream 1280 over recent years and we had some great times onboard. I even sailed the yacht alone from Breukelen to Friesland, a wonderful trip that gave me valuable experience. I hope to soon be able to channel my enthusiasm into an internship at the editorial office of a well-known motorboat magazine, where I can further add to my knowledge and experience. You can follow the story of the build and my trips on Instagram via @motorjachtjuus.”
Why did the family choose Van den Hoven?
“After the Boarnstream we felt that the time had come to move up a level to something larger with a greater degree of luxury and comfort. Coincidentally, I ran into Michelle van den Hoven this summer at the Harderwijk marina and, three days later, met Bart van den Hoven in Woudsend. This was our first introduction to the family as I shared our situation and desire to move into a higher market segment. It was then that the 1700 Mk2 caught our attention.“We followed up our interest with a visit to the shipyard in Waspik and that was an experience in itself. You could feel that Van den Hoven is a true family business with a genuine passion for boating. They know what they’re talking about and have a wealth of know-how and experience. The conversations were open and genuine, something that you cannot take for granted elsewhere. One of the Van den Hoven pillars is service and the entire family is always ready to help clients whenever needed. I think that’s something you often find in such businesses and it’s very valuable.”
How does the 1700 Mk2 stand out from other motoryachts in this segment?
“We visited quite a few yards and the 1700 Mk2 quickly stood out for the way she combines a super-elegant design with an impressive amount of space. This is hard to find in the current market and we also think the price-to-quality ratio is excellent, which is reflected in the consistent resale values achieved.”
Do you already know how you’re going to use this 1700 Mk2?
“Absolutely. She will be used intensively as I will be living onboard. All this available space and comfort makes her a luxury apartment on the water. I plan to cruise extensively through the Netherlands and already feel like the captain of my own boat. The rest of the family will also often use the 1700 Mk2 at weekends and during the holiday season. I am delighted that she will be ready soon and am really looking forward to spending time on this stunning motoryacht. Our new Executive 1700 Mk2’s home port will be Naarden.”
